Since 1634, the villagers of Oberammergau have honored a sacred promise made during a devastating plague — to perform the story of Christ’s final days once every ten years, for as long as the village endures. They have never broken that vow.
What makes this event truly breathtaking is its scale and sincerity. Nearly half the village’s population participates as actors, musicians, singers, and stage crew. There are no professional performers imported from the outside world — these are neighbors, farmers, teachers, and shopkeepers who rehearse for years and grow their hair and beards in dedication to their roles.
The result is one of the world’s most extraordinary cultural, artistic, and spiritual experiences — witnessed by over 500,000 visitors from around the globe every decade.
